Apple and Samsung resolved the longest dispute about smart phone patents

Apple and Samsung resolved the longest dispute about smart phone patents
Apple and Samsung, the technology industry, have reached a final settlement of a seven-year patent dispute, ending a protracted battle over the design of their smartphones.

The details and conditions of the settlement have yet to be disclosed, but the court closed the case, which lasted from 2011 until 2018, by rejecting all complaints from both parties without retaining their rights to file claims on the same grounds.

According to the case documents, published on Wednesday in the online database of the District Court of Northern California, the plaintiff and the defendant in this case told the court that they "reached an agreement to withdraw their claims and resolve the remaining mutual differences."

But the announcement came weeks after a US jury fined South Korea's Samsung for $ 539 million, a compensation to Apple for exploiting and copying features and features from its original iPhone.

The battle between the giants of the smart phone and tablet industry started in 2011, when the US company sued its rival from South Korea, asking for more than $ 2 billion in damages.

This judicial dispute was the first of many cases between the two companies in courts around the world.

In 2012, a US jury sentenced Apple for $ 399 million for violating Samsung's designs for the US company, which included design elements, such as a screen displaying icons in a black grid.

Samsung appealed for a reduction in the amount of compensation and filed its case with the Supreme Court, arguing that compensation should be limited since the patent infringement involves certain features only.

In 2016, the Supreme Court unanimously approved Samsung's appeal and the need to reduce compensation.

But the judges did not rule on the patents themselves, leaving that decision to a lower court.

The case was considered by the court in May and ended with a bigger defeat for Samsung, which raised the compensation to $ 539 million, an increase of $ 140 million from the figure resumed by the company.
