WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President Donald H. Trump's lawyer, Michael Cohen, tried to get more than $ 1 million from the Qatari government in late 2016 in return for advice and proximity to President Trump's administration, the Washington Post reported.

The newspaper added that this information attributed to several sources related to the incident that Qatar rejected the offer of Cohen, who was on the sidelines of a meeting in the Trump Tower between the Qatari Foreign Minister and Michael Vellin, who later became the national security adviser in the Trump department.

Cohen did not attend the meeting, but spoke separately to a member of the Qatari delegation, Ahmed al-Rumaihi, who was the head of the Qatari sovereign wealth fund, an investment institution.

Al-Rumaihi said yesterday in a telephone interview that Cohen initially asked for the money, but Rumaihi refused a few days before the meeting at the Trump Tower, but when he met Rumaihi Cohen at a New York hotel, Cohen asked for the money.

Cohen and his lawyer did not respond to requests for comment, and the Qatari embassy in Washington refused to comment on the matter.
